Gauteng is among the nine provinces of South Africa representing the eastern half of the country. The name in Sotho/Tswana languages also means "bay of gold". Gauteng is South Africa's most populated province with a population of more than 2.6 million. This makes it the fifth largest city in the whole country.
The reason why Gauteng tops the list of cities to relocate to is its natural beauty. It has long been recognized for the striking cliffs and mountains that frames the Atlantic Ocean. It has long been known for the abundance of minerals and other valuable resources. The abundance of these resources make Gauteng an important industrial, commercial, and technological center. As a result of these industrial needs the city has invested a lot in infrastructural developments including housing, transport and communications.
Gauteng was originally a small fishing village, which was later transformed into what we call today Gauteng. Its geography is very similar to that of the cape. Lake Muckle is where most of Gauteng's fresh water springs. Mound Lake is the name for underground springs where water is stored. These springs are very popular among tourists as they are able to enjoy the natural surroundings.
Populationdensity in Gauteng is slightly higher than that of the rest of the province and this contributes to the increase in demand for housing in Gauteng. There is a large concentration of foreign nationals who have established their home in Gauteng as it provides a safer environment for them. Apart from this the high quality of life in Gauteng has led to a gradual increase in the population density. This was seen in the past decade with the completion of projects like Kloppersville and the Orange Farm project which resulted in an influx of large numbers of foreign nationals who settled in Gauteng.
Gauteng has undergone a rapid urbanization process in the last twenty years. The main reason for this was the opening up of the Gold Reef City to the outside world in the late eighties. Between these two decades a new airport was built in Gauteng, which allowed more people to commute between Gauteng and the rest of the province. This has increased the population of Gauteng substantially and the rise in the housing market has only helped to intensify the pace of urbanization.
The future of Gauteng looks very bright with the completion of further developments such as the addition of more schools, housing estates and more commercial establishments. This will help to accommodate the increasing number of people while ensuring that the standard of living of these people remains high. The future of Gauteng as a whole looks very promising with many people predicting the city for more than twenty more years. The only thing standing in the way of these developments is the lack of land for development.
